When I blogged on Jan 14, 2013 that the mortality rate for cancer had declined, I was elated, but cautious. I was cautious because I was not sure that the mortality rate for African Americans (AA) was equally successful. I was right to be cautious. While there has been improvements in AA death rate numbers, it is not time for total celebration. The American Cancer Society had this to say on this matter:
"The great news is that overall cancer death rates have steadily decreased for African American men and women. |

According to the latest national data, overall death rates from cancer declined from 2000 through 2009 in the United States, maintaining a trend seen since the early 1990s. Mortality fell for most cancer types, including the four most common types of cancer in the United States (lung, colon and rectum, breast, and prostate), although the trend varied by cancer type and across racial and ethnic groups.

Researchers have engineered a drug that can deliver a potent cell-killing toxin to tumors while largely sparing normal tissues. The drug, known asG202, shrankxenografttumors of several human cancers in mice, includingprostate, breast, kidney, andbladdercancer, and had relatively few toxic effects. On the basis of thesefindings, reported June 27 inScience TranslationalMedicine, researchers have initiated an early-phase clinical trialof G202 in patients with advanced cancer. G202 delivers its toxic payload—a potent |

Hookah smoking is no safer than cigarette smoking. If you read no further, that is the take-home message for this blog -- no matter what you may have heard or read, the scientific evidence is clear that hookah smoking is not a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes. Countering the widely-held, although mistaken, belief that hookah smoking is safer than cigarette smoking is important, so let's take a step back and consider what hookah is, learn about its history and current popularity, and then look at the facts about the scientific evidence regarding its effects on health. |

Last week, several health organizations issued newcervical cancer screening guidelines that extend the time interval between screening tests for most women. Based on comprehensive reviews of available data—including NCI-funded research—the new guidelines seek to maximize the benefits of current screening tests while minimizing their potential harms.
The United States Preventive Services Task Force(USPSTF) released one set of guidelines, and a group of three health organizations—the American Cancer Society (ACS), the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP), and the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)—released a second set. |

BREAKING NEWS 2-21-12
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced a series of steps to increase the supply of critically needed cancer drugs and build on President Obama’s Executive Order to help prevent future drug shortages.
“A drug shortage can be a frightening prospect for patients and President Obama made it clear that preventing these shortages from happening is a top priority of his administration,” said FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D. “Through the collaborative work of FDA, industry, and other stakeholders, patients and families waiting for these products or anxious about their availability should now be able to get the medication they need. |

Patients with early-stage Hodgkin lymphoma who were treated with multi-drug chemotherapy alone were more likely to be alive 12 years later than patients who received the same chemotherapy plus radiation therapy, according to findings from a phase III clinical trial. More patients who received radiation therapy in addition to chemotherapy died of second cancers or other toxic late effects of their treatment, such as heart disease, than those who received chemotherapy alone, researchers |

Results of a study of men who have sex with men revealed that vaccination with the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine Gardasil, which protects against HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18, reduced their risk of persistent anal HPV infection and decreased the incidence of anal intraepithelial neoplasia, a lesion known to precede anal cancer. The findings were published October 27 in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The incidence of anal cancer has been growing by around 2 percent a year in the general population. |
