"Stem cells are primal 'blank' cells that can renew themselves. Taken from an early-stage embryo, they can be isolated and then cultured into specialized cell types, such as muscle or nerves. This offers remarkable potential for the treatment of diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Cancer. Allen's preparation for stem cell transplantation involved a few steps before the actual transplant procedure. First, he had to go into the hospital for 96 hours to receive a high dose chemotherapy treatment. |

Today was a day of celebration for cancer survivors all across the country. It was National Cancer Survivors Day, and I celebrated with my hospital in their 18th year of such a celebration. All of us wore our purple tee-shirts signifying that we were indeed survivors. It was a joy to see each other, recognizing all the pain we suffered through with our various cancers. It was a joy to know you were not in the nightmare by yourself. It was a joy to know you could be counted amongst the living knowing there were so many who were not. |

"Memoirs of Cancer" wishes all mothers everywhere a very wonderful Mother's Day. If you are a cancer patient going through chemo or radiation and still maintaining a household with children, then you are even more deserving of praise and rest on your mother's day.

Initially, when you are told that you have to be on chemotherapy (chemo) for your cancer, you know there will be side effects. However, nothing truly prepares you for the real thing and your own body's particular repsonse to the chemo. Under chemo, my body turned stranger to me. I was so ill from the side effects from the chemo drugs, that after awhile I couldn't even focus on what the actual cancer was doing to me. I felt as if I was dying little by little from the chemo side effects. I had mutliple side effects including having some heart attacks. |
