FDA acts to bolster supply of critically needed cancer drugs Announcements build on President Obama’s Executive Order

BREAKING NEWS 2-21-12

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced a series of steps to increase the supply of critically needed cancer drugs and build on President Obama’s Executive Order to help prevent future drug shortages.

“A drug shortage can be a frightening prospect for patients and President Obama made it clear that preventing these shortages from happening is a top priority of his administration,” said FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D. “Through the collaborative work of FDA, industry, and other stakeholders, patients and families waiting for these products or anxious about their availability should now be able to get the medication they need.

Treatment Uses Antibodies and Light to Target Cancer Cells

Researchers from NCI’s Center for Cancer Research (CCR) led by Dr. Hisataka Kobayashi have developed a new type of targeted anticancer treatment using photoimmunotherapy—a light-activated “nano-bomb” bound to amonoclonal antibody (mAb) that delivers the cellular disruptor to tumor cells. In experiments in cells grown in the laboratory and in mouse models, the treatment effectively killed cancer cells that had an excess of a protein targeted by the mAb on their surfaces but spared normal cells.

Call Congress Tomorrow for Pancreatic Cancer Bill

The passing of technology industry icon Steve Jobs on October 5 reminded the world once again of how deadly a disease pancreatic cancer is. Legislation is pending in Congress though that can potentially change the status quo for this disease: the Pancreatic Cancer Research & Education Act (S. 362/H.R. 733). This bill would compel the National Cancer Institute to develop a long-term and comprehensive strategic plan to make progress in fighting this silent killer.

PLAN TO CALL CONGRESS TOMORROW.

This is soo cool:

Hundreds of men and women dawned heels of all shapes and sizes for the second annual Stiletto Sprint. Benefitting the Susan G. Komen foundation and the Garden of Hope and Courage, 5th Avenue South was a sea of pink on Friday evening. The race, though only spanning a few short blocks, was an exciting one, heels flew off mid sprint, as the front of the pack charged towards the finish line. Festivities continued through the evening with an after party at Cafe and Bar Lucrat and the Pink is Power street party on 5th.

Study Suggests How the BRCA1 Protein May Help Suppress Tumors

Mutations in the BRCA1 gene are known to increase a woman’s
lifetime risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers, but
researchers are still investigating how the protein encoded
by this gene helps suppress the formation of tumors.

Nature offers some clues.Using mice and human breast

'Smart' nanoparticles identify, target and kill cancer cells

Another weapon in the arsenal against cancer has been invented at Cornell: nanoparticles that identify, target and kill specific cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone.

Led by Carl Batt, the Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor of Food Science, the researchers synthesized nanoparticles -- shaped something like a dumbbell -- made of gold sandwiched between two pieces of iron oxide. They then attached antibodies that target a molecule found only in colorectal cancer cells to the particles.

Eribulin Improves Survival of Women with Metastatic Breast Cancer

Eribulin  Improves Survival of Women with Metastatic Breast Cancer

Treatment with eribulin (Halaven) improved overall survival in women with metastatic breast cancer whose disease progressed despite multiple rounds of prior chemotherapy, according to the results of a phase III clinical trial called EMBRACE. Based on these findings, the FDA approved eribulin last November for women with metastatic disease who have already undergone at least two previous chemotherapy regimens.
