Why This Trial Is Important
Women diagnosed with breast cancer that has already spread (metastasized) to other parts of the body are usually treated with systemic therapy, which may include chemotherapy,

Combination Therapy Shows Promise for Treating Advanced Breast Cancer

Adding the drug everolimus (Afinitor) to exemestane helped postmenopausal women whose advanced breast cancer had stopped responding to hormonal therapy live about 4 months longer without the disease progressing than women who received exemestane alone. Findings from the trial, called BOLERO 2, were presented last week at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium

.For women who received the combination therapy, the median progression-free survival

Two Drugs that Hit One Target Show Efficacy against Metastastic Breast Cancer

Combining two drugs that target the HER2 proteintrastuzumab (Herceptin) and the investigational agentpertuzumab, with chemotherapy may be a new treatment option for women with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer, according to results from a large clinical trial.

The phase III CLEOPATRA trial showed that combining both of the HER2-targeting agents with the chemotherapy drug docetaxel as an initial treatment led to a 6-month improvement in progression-free survival

Promising Results Against Advanced HER2 + Breast Cancer

T-DM1 Produces Promising Results Against Advanced HER2-Positive Breast CancerAmong women with metastatic, HER2-positive breast cancer, trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1)—an investigational drug that combines Herceptin® (trastuzumab) and a chemotherapy drug—resulted in better progression-free survival than standard chemotherapy and Herceptin. For more click HERE

Combination Therapy May Help Some Patients with Advanced Breast Cancer

A combination of two available cancer drugs could offer a new treatment option for
postmenopausal women whose advanced breast cancer has stopped responding to
hormonal therapy,  researchers said last week at a scientific meeting in Stockholm,
 Sweden.
The experimental treatment is a combination of everolimus(Afinitor) and exemestane
In a phase III clinical trial, women who received the combination lived for a median of
11 months without the disease progressing, compared with about 4 months for

For Young Women, Breast Conserving Surgery May Be Acceptable Alternative to Mastectomy

Women under age 40 who had breast-conserving surgery (BCS)
did not have higher rates of local recurrence or poorer
overall survival compared with women who underwent
mastectomy, according to results from two retrospective
studies. Young age at diagnosis is thought to be a
risk factor for disease recurrence, and many young women
with breast cancer choose mastectomy for treatment.
The research was presented at the

Study Suggests How the BRCA1 Protein May Help Suppress Tumors

Mutations in the BRCA1 gene are known to increase a woman’s
lifetime risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers, but
researchers are still investigating how the protein encoded
by this gene helps suppress the formation of tumors.
